For some time it has been apparent to those responsible for the development of the UNISIST. 1) programme, sponsored by Unesco, that telecomunication technology would be a crucial element in the coming years in the development of modern information systems and networks. Subsequently enquiries were made in 1973-74 to IFIP. 2)to explore ways in which its Technical Committee on Data Communication, TC-6, could be of aid in the planning and selection methods to support regional networks for the exchange and maintenance of on-line bibliographic information. In May 1974 a contract between UENSCO and IFIP was signed, calling for a study by IFIP TC-6 on the subject. The results of this study is presented in this report and associated annexes.
