Intracellular information transfer is basic to virtually every biological process, therefore it is of great value to understand and appreciate the complexities and the diversity of modes of signalling. Studies of biochemical events underlying phototransduction, the process in photoreceptor cells whereby light generates a nerve signal, have set the stage for discoveries of several general themes in cellular signalling. Invertebrate visual transduction is particularly interesting because, in spite of its apparent complexity, it bears similarity to other signalling systems. Phototransduction may involve activation of and interaction between two common biochemical pathways. Activation of multiple interacting pathways may reflect common themes in cell signalling.
